Our Story

Iron, fire and a hammer.

Long before nonstick coatings, cooks across China relied on one pan for almost everything: a thin iron wok, shaped by hammer and blackened by years of use. Metalsmiths would hammer iron into a bowl, strike by strike, until it curved just right. Every dimple left behind made the pan a little better at releasing food.

That wok didn't wear out. It got better. Each meal added another layer of seasoning, and the pan was handed down, not thrown away.

Why we started Hammerwok

We're a small, independent team of home cooks. We grew tired of coated pans that scratched, flaked and ended up in the trash after a couple of years, and we couldn't find a traditional hammered wok that was simple to buy, fairly priced and actually suited to Western stoves.

So we went looking. We now work with a cookware workshop in Zhejiang, China, that makes hammered iron woks with wooden handles. We chose a flat-bottom design so it sits steady on gas, electric and induction cooktops, and we paired it with the lids people kept asking us for.

What we believe

  • Buy once. A well-seasoned iron wok can last a lifetime.
  • No mystery coatings. Just iron, oil and heat.
  • Honest help. Seasoning can feel intimidating, so we wrote a plain-English guide and answer every email ourselves.

Hammerwok is a young brand, and we're earning our reputation one kitchen at a time. Thank you for cooking with us.
